JG-54 was one of the greatest units of the Luftwaffe and was lead by General Hannes Trautloft. Visible on the side of his aircraft is the green heart emblem from Trautloft's home town and was quickly adopted by the rest of the group. Trautloft fought in Poland, the Battle of Britain and later on the Russian front. By April 1942 his 'gruppe' had scored more than 2,000 victories. In December of that year they switched from ME109's to FW190's which were far better equipped to handle the harsh conditions.
