Nicolas Trudgian is regarded by many as the premier aviation artist with a pencil. His stunning drawings have drawn the attention of critics and collectors alike around the world for many years and demand for his work remains constantly high. In his fantastic drawing, "Dambusters", Nic pays a fitting tribute to the brave RAF aircrews of Bomber Command 617 Squadron and their now legendary raid on the Great Ruhr Dams, 1943. Squadron "X" was formed at R.A.F Scampton on the 17th March 1943 under the command of Wing Commander Guy Gibson to destroy the Great Dams of the Ruhr valley and disrupt tie German war machine. It was a near impossible mission with a predicted low survival rate. 617 Squadron paid a high price for their daring mission but succeeded with spectacular results and became one of the most famous bombing raids of the Second World War.
The drawing has been personally signed by the artist and the following distinguished "Dambusters" veterans: Flight Sergeant Grant McDonald (rear gunner in aircraft AJ-F) Flight Sergeant George Chalmers (wireless operator in aircraft AJ-O) Squadron Leader Ken Brown CGM (Pilot of aircraft AJ-F) Squadron Leader Les Munro DSO, DFC (Pilot of aircraft AJ-W) Squadron Leader George "Johnny" Johnson MBE, DFM (bomb aimer in aircraft AJ-T) Sergeant Fred Sutherland (front gunner in aircraft AJ-N) Flight Officer Ray Grayston (flight engineer in aircraft AJ-N) Flight Lieutenant Dave Rodger DFC (rear gunner in aircraft AJ-T) and, Harry Humphries (appointed by Wing Commander Guy Gibson as the 617 Squadron Adjutant at RAF Scampton. He helped plan and co-ordinate the raid)
The drawing also has the additional signature of highly distinguished 617 Squadron veteran pilot; Squadron Leader Tony Iveson DFC (Pilot on all the raids against the German battleship Tirpitz)
