Royal Air Force Battle of Britain Series

“This is a remarkable collection of autographs of Hurricane and Spitfire pilots who took part in the Battle of Britain. I applaud the concept. It helps us never to forget those who flew and fought alongside us but never survived to tell the tale”

Group Captain Peter Townsend, DSO, DFC March 1984

Special Distinguished Flying Cross Edition:

"Group Captain Duncan Smith DSO*, DFC** & Wing Commander Alan Deere DSO, DFC**"

Two of the most famous fighter aces of WWII. Duncan Smith, a highly decorated Battle of Britain pilot, flew four operation tours on Spitfires, led 64 Sqn, then 244 Wing’s Spitfires in Malta. A great Wing Leader and a double-ace with 13 victories, ‘Smithy’ always led from the front. Determined, fearless, and a highly skilled fighter pilot, Duncan Smith had the respect of all squadron and wing pilots he led, and was decorated for gallantry no fewer than five times!

It was with 54 Sqn that Deere flew his first Spitfire, the aircraft he was to fly and fight through the Battle to Britain, and to the end of his operational career. Deere was a ferocious fighter ace, subjected his aircraft to stresses beyond the makers warnings, was always in the thickest of the dog-fighting, and led a charmed life: He and his aircraft parted company no fewer than 9 times, but during a distinguished combat career he accounted for 22 enemy aircraft destroyed in the sir.

The Print:

Achtung Spitfire! by Darryl Legg

The greatest defensive fighter ever built, and arguably the most beautiful, its sleek lines wonderfully captured by the outstanding aviation artist Darryl Legg who has set a typical scene from 1941 with Spitfires of No.616 Squadron, of the famous Tangmere Wing, as they cross the English Channel, heading towards the French coast on another sortie to harass and engage the Luftwaffe.

The Medal:

To represent one of the RAF gallantry decorations each one of these pilots received during World War Two, a miniature replica Distinguished Flying Cross has been expertly mounted into the display.

BACKGROUND, PROVENANCE & AUTHENTICITY

Each autograph was personally collected in the early 1980s by Mr Pat Barnard, who had founded the Military Gallery during the 1970's. These original signatures formed part of a project supported by Group Captain Sir Douglas Bader, Group Captain Leonard Cheshire VC, Air Vice Marshal Johnnie Johnson, Brigadier General Robin Olds and General Adolf Galland, all of whom advised and helped Mr Barnard collect the signatures.

Every Autograph (signature) offered by the publisher with this series of "Ensembles" is guaranteed to be original and genuine. Our reputation depends upon our integrity: We do not buy signatures from outside sources where it is often difficult to ascertain authenticity. We have the undisputed provenance for each signature which means that every Certificate of Authenticity supplied by the publisher is as genuine as the signatures it supports.

The Certificate of Authenticity supplied with each original autograph is authorised by the publisher, therefore making the Certificate a valuable document in itself. To counter the proliferation of forged signatures in the market today, and to guarantee the genuine nature of your investment, please keep your Certificate safe and secure. It will ensure there can never be any doubt as to the value of your collection in years to come.
