Royal Air Force Bomber Command Series

“Bomber aircrews took all the same risks that we pilots took and the fact that entire crews are represented in your fine collection of autographs makes this project all the more valuable”

Group Captain Leonard Cheshire, VC, DSO**, DFC* April 1984

Distinguished Flying Cross Edition:

"Group Captain John Cunningham DSO**, DFC* & Air Marshal Sir Ivor Broom DSO, DFC**, AFC"

Two of the RAF’s best known and most successful Mosquito pilots. After a successful start to night-fighting flying the Beaufighter, in January 1943 John ‘Cats Eyes’ Cunningham took command of 85 Squadron equipped with the high performance Mosquito. Ivor Broom, with his navigator Tommy Broom – known as the Flying Brooms – became legendary for their daring precision attacks.

Ivor Broom completed over 100 bombing missions including 22 attacks on Berlin, his daring raids including a low-level (50 feet) mining attack on the Dortmund-Ems canal and tossing a 4000lb bomb into the mouth of a rail tunnel in the Ardennes during the German offensive. John Cunningham, best known RAF night fighter pilot of the war, became chief test pilot at De Havilland in 1946 first flying the revolutionary Comet airliner.

The Print:

Pathfinder Mosquito by Darryl Legg

The Mosquito, in various guises, flew in almost every role performed by the RAF in WWII. It was light, fast and manoeverable, making this wooden aircraft a favourite with its two-man crews. Darryl Legg’s painting shows the Pathfinder variant.

The Medal:

To represent one of the RAF gallantry decorations each one of these pilots received during World War Two, a miniature replica Distinguished Flying Cross medal has been expertly mounted into the display.

BACKGROUND, PROVENANCE & AUTHENTICITY

Each autograph was personally collected in the early 1980s by Mr Pat Barnard, who had founded the Military Gallery during the 1970's. These original signatures formed part of a project supported by Group Captain Sir Douglas Bader, Group Captain Leonard Cheshire VC, Air Vice Marshal Johnnie Johnson, Brigadier General Robin Olds and General Adolf Galland, all of whom advised and helped Mr Barnard collect the signatures.

Every Autograph (signature) offered by the publisher with this series of "Ensembles" is guaranteed to be original and genuine. Our reputation depends upon our integrity: We do not buy signatures from outside sources where it is often difficult to ascertain authenticity. We have the undisputed provenance for each signature which means that every Certificate of Authenticity supplied by the publisher is as genuine as the signatures it supports.

The Certificate of Authenticity supplied with each original autograph is authorised by the publisher, therefore making the Certificate a valuable document in itself. To counter the proliferation of forged signatures in the market today, and to guarantee the genuine nature of your investment, please keep your Certificate safe and secure. It will ensure there can never be any doubt as to the value of your collection in years to come.
