Royal Air Force Battle of Britain Series

“This is a remarkable collection of autographs of Hurricane and Spitfire pilots who took part in the Battle of Britain. I applaud the concept. It helps us never to forget those who flew and fought alongside us but never survived to tell the tale”

Group Captain Peter Townsend, DSO, DFC March 1984

Distinguished Service Order Edition

"Group Captain Peter Townsend DSO, DFC & Group Captain Frank Carey DSO, DFC, DFM**"

Two highly decorated and distinguished fighter pilots both of whom became synonymous with the Hurricane during and after the Battle of Britain. Frank Carey flew Hurricanes almost throughout the war, Peter Townsend commanded 85 Sqn through the Battle and formed the first Hurricane night fighter squadron in the Blitz.

Frank Carey became the most highly decorated Hurricane fighter pilot of WWII, flying before, during and after the Battle of Britain in which he often flew as many as six operational sorties a day. Later transferring to the Far East he led the Hurricane wing in Rangoon. Peter Townsend commanded 85 Sqn’s Hurricanes for more than a year from May 1940, first as a day fighter squadron, then as the first night fighter squadron during the Blitz of London. After many other commands he became Equerry to King George VI in 1944.

The Print:

Hurricanes Over Kent by Darryl Legg

BACKGROUND, PROVENANCE & AUTHENTICITY

Each autograph was personally collected in the early 1980s by Mr Pat Barnard, who had founded the Military Gallery during the 1970's. These original signatures formed part of a project supported by Group Captain Sir Douglas Bader, Group Captain Leonard Cheshire VC, Air Vice Marshal Johnnie Johnson, Brigadier General Robin Olds and General Adolf Galland, all of whom advised and helped Mr Barnard collect the signatures.

Every Autograph (signature) offered by the publisher with this series of "Ensembles" is guaranteed to be original and genuine. Our reputation depends upon our integrity: We do not buy signatures from outside sources where it is often difficult to ascertain authenticity. We have the undisputed provenance for each signature which means that every Certificate of Authenticity supplied by the publisher is as genuine as the signatures it supports.

The Certificate of Authenticity supplied with each original autograph is authorised by the publisher, therefore making the Certificate a valuable document in itself. To counter the proliferation of forged signatures in the market today, and to guarantee the genuine nature of your investment, please keep your Certificate safe and secure. It will ensure there can never be any doubt as to the value of your collection in years to come.
