In July 1940, 501 Squadron of RAF Fighter Command were based at Gravesend, Kent. # Depicted here, two of their aircraft have just been in combat over the south coast, and are forming up to patrol for stragglers. 501 Squadron was the only fighter squadron not to be rested during the Battle of Britain. When Sir Keith Park was questioned about this sometime after the war by Squadron Leader Hogan the reply was very simple, "I knew I could rely on 501".
